I wrote this article for the RHS website after reading something about how few councils collect food waste separately. The rest gets collected with general waste and either sent to land fill or incinerated. Our council at home does recycle food as best they can, but as a gardener, it bothered me that I was giving away all this food waste that could be potential plant feed and soil enricher. I have an, admittedly complicated, set up at home which means we don’t really throw away food waste at all. It’s a lot of effort to go to, but for me it’s worth it, especially when I remember last summer, when I had to clean a maggot-infested food bin several times.

It’s possible to compost pretty much all your leftovers because of bokashi, and I’m a bit of a convert. My Auntie Janet turned me onto it many years ago, buying me the kit for Christmas, but I’ve only really got into the routine of using it properly this year. Added to my wormery, I realise I’m in danger of producing the smugest compost in the south east – an extremely competitive field. I have just added shredded Guardian supplements to the wormery, so I’m clearly upping my game.
